Jew Town and Paradesi Synagogue – A historic Jewish settlement in Kochi

Jew Town, located in Mattancherry, Kochi, is a vibrant historical area known for its antique shops, spice markets, and colonial-era charm. It was once the heart of the Jewish community in Kerala, and its narrow streets still reflect a blend of Jewish, Portuguese, and Malabari influences.

At the end of Jew Town stands the Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568, making it the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth. It features stunning Belgian chandeliers, hand-painted Chinese tiles, and antique scrolls of the Torah. The synagogue’s clock tower, built in 1760, adds to its historic appeal.
