Literally scenic, Idukki is a quiet place nestled among mountains and offers a perfect retreat to most people who are fed up with noisy cities. Idukki literally means ‘heaven’ and this district is replete with massive trees and tea plantations, waterfalls, and wildlife forms and vehemently provides a natural view of Kerala.
Whichever it may be – an urge perhaps inspired by the desire to run away to the woods or have an adventure, a visit to Idukki will be more than worth it.
Idukki also has access to other important cities in Kerala by fairly beautiful roads. There is also the availability of state-owned and private buses from Kochi and Kottayam, and from Trivandrum to Idukki. If you drive, the journey through these winding mountain roads, the shades of green and spice gardens are as exciting as the destination itself.
Kottayam, which is about 114 km distant, and Ernakulam, which is 130 km away, are the two main railway stations in the Idukki district. From there you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Idukki. The journey of trains to these stations reveals the beautiful landscape that makes the state of Kerala a scenic beauty destination for adventure.
The closest airport to Idukki is at Cochin which will take one hundred (100) Kilometers to get there. If you are landed at any of these places you can take a taxi or bus direct to Idukki. Starting from the airport to the gallery one gets a glimpse of the cultural and natural scenic beauty of Idukki through valleys and hills covered with fog.
One should visit Idukki in the winter since the climate during this period is fairly mild. The climate of between 10°C and 25°C is ideal for enjoying the greenery of Idukki, Nature walks and treks through the hills, and the quiet of the Hills stations. Due to the clear skies, the area is best suited for photography and to admire stunning views.
Summer in Idukki is not as hot as one might imagine, the temperatures may rise to as high as 30 degrees but the altitude guarantees a reasonably tolerable heat. It is a good time to visit the waterfalls, tea gardens, and the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s best to engage in outdoor activities in the early morning and in the evening.
If you are fond of the rainy season and not disturbed by the interruption this season is really wonderful and off-beat to explore. The level of rainfall during the monsoon makes Idukki even more beautiful with lots of rains for the forests, waterfalls, and rivers. The views are stunning, however, the wet climate may hamper outside activities.
The Idukki Arch Dam which is one of the largest in Asia is an engineering marvel place amidst picturesque background. Tourism here provides a view of the extensive stretches of valleys and the silent flowing Periyar River.
Enjoy the live setting of riding on windy hills just to capture a birds-eye view of Tamil Nadu. This place is rather memorable due to the presence of rather stiff winds and interesting rocks nearby.
One of the calm and quiet places is Anayirankal which consists of a peaceful reservoir surrounded by a vast tea plantation area which will be preferable for visitors to sit and watch the beautiful scenery or take a tour in the boat.
Idukki offers a variety of accommodations and these accommodations vary from splendid high-end hills resorts to homestays that provide comfort with local exposure. For a unique experience, consider eco-lodges or treehouses amidst the forests.
